From August to September 2023, at the Shevchenko Museum in Toronto, Canada, which is an important center of Ukrainian culture, there was a group photo exhibition of Ukrainian newly arrived artists on the theme: "Memories of the Future" .
The mission was to challenge common preconceptions of what “Ukrainian art” is.
We were invited to reflect on the theme of what we as artists, as creative people, carry forward from the past of our ancestors into what is our future. It is also a certain search for forms to convey something eternal, which is not subject to time.
For me, this theme is about my connection with my lineage, my ancestors, my native land. About the values and worldview of Ukrainians, who have always as a society lived in very close connection with nature. Respected it, took care of it, worshiped it. This is also about how modern people living in the city lose this subtle connection, thereby losing the memory and knowledge of many generations of our ancestors.
In the exhibition, I participated with 4 of my photo works.
The photo "I am" and a series of 3 photos "Woman of Strength".
The first photo (hands in wheat, reaching for the sky) became the cover of the exhibition poster and was chosen by the curators as the media that visually conveys the theme of the exhibition. The curators of the exhibition were the Art Collective "Vytik", who were very helpful in the selection process and preparation. The bottom part is from an article by a journalist who visited the "Memories of the Future" exhibition.
In conclusion. I feel a lot of gratitude and warmth for this experience. It was very valuable to feel a part of the Ukrainian community of artists being so far away from Ukraine and to speak about an important topic for me, through photography.Let's not forget that the memory of generations, and their heritage, sprouts into the world today, through us. And it is we who decide whether we will decorate and harmonize our present or we will float along the current of ignorance.
